Turn-of-the-century romance in new wrapping brings us Vintage Stories 2011

This spring’s new collection, Vintage Stories, draws inspiration from La Belle Epoque, the romantic era that influenced fashion around the turn of the century. Gossamer fabrics, lace insets and embroidered details have inspired the designs. The beautiful christening gown in the children’s collection stands out on its own with features that are reminiscent of a family heirloom.

“Our inspiration comes from the well-dressed, chaste look that strongly dominated fashion at the beginning of the last century and we have therefore given special emphasis to elaborate details, as can be clearly seen on the dress Vinnie with its narrow pleats and covered buttons. We have also been inspired by beautiful antique washed cotton fabrics and cloths found in the vintage boutiques of Paris,” enthuses Sophie Lilja, Collection Manager for KappAhl Women.

The collection comprises skirts, dresses, blouses, tunics, cardigans and sleeveless tops. The meticulously designed garments feature elegant details such as cut-work embroidery and crochet lace. White is the essence of the collection with touches of light pink and faded terracotta to add a rustic feel. The collection also includes matching and period accessories, such as beautiful brooches, hairpins, ballet shoes and a stunning lace fabric bag. All the jewellery has an antique feel. The Grandma Watch is particularly eye-catching with its elegant floral detailing that has been inspired by grandmother’s jewellery collection.

“The trimmed white blouse was a staple item in the wardrobe around the turn of the century and in this collection too. Other essentials are the long skirt and cardigan with embroidered bell sleeves. They look sensational worn layer upon layer and adorned with antique jewellery in darker silver and precious stones,” says Sophie Lilja.

Vintage Stories also includes a children’s collection in which the most striking garment is the christening gown adorned with beautiful embroidery and with a white matching bonnet. Also part of the children’s collection are the short knee breeches, inspired by the pantalettes worn at the turn of the century and reproduced here in an updated version. Just as in the women’s collection, other items of clothing have been inspired by the fine hand-sewn details that were so characteristic of the turn of the century fashion and are made of woven cotton fabric for maximum comfort. The collection comes in a white and pale pink colourway.
